The Importance of Testosterone

A steroid hormone, testosterone is the male sex hormone and an anabolic steroid.

It is produced in the body, both by male testicles and female ovaries, with smaller amounts produced by the adrenal glands.

It has a significant effect on male development in particular, and is a driving force in puberty and beyond as the body matures and grows.

The amount of testosterone produced by the testes is dependent on the hypothalamus, a portion of the brain, and the pituitary gland, which controls a number of essential thyroids in the body.

Testosterone has an important role in the development, growth, maintenance and repair of reproductive tissues like the testes and prostate, and also enhances other masculine characteristics like body hair growth, increased muscle and bone mass, sex drive sexual functioning.

This is why it pays such a pivotal role during puberty.

It also effects fat distribution across the body, moods and energy levels. Whilst women also produce and experience the effects of testosterone, the hormone is produced at 20 times a great rate daily in men than women, and its effects are much less pronounced.

Athletes and Bodybuilders in particular rely on optimum testosterone levels to help boost muscle mass and strength as well as keeping excess body fat at bay.

Low testosterone occurs when the body’s testosterone levels fall below 300 ng/dl in men. This has a medical name, hypogonadism, and happens when the brain isn’t telling the testes to produce testosterone.

The amount of testosterone in the male body decreases each year after the age of 30, whereas Women’s testosterone is highest around the age of 20, and slowly declines with age.

Testosterone decline is a natural part of ageing, but can have a range of effects of health, most pertinently in males.

Changing sleep patterns, concentration levels and moods (things like a lack of motivation or low self-esteem), reduced strength and muscle mass, increased body fat levels and decreased bone density are all results of testosterone decline.

Testosterone decline also makes it more difficult for males to maintain muscle mass.

This has a much less pronounced desire once females, although they may experience changes in mood, sexual desire and satisfaction.

Fortunately, there are ways to counter declines in testosterone levels – from prescription drug based muscle injections and tablets to implants and creams.
